COMP 156 Oral Presentation

In a University credit course oral presentation skills are a requirement. Each student will select a computer related topic that is of interest to them. You will use the sign up sheet that I bring to class to select a date to deliver your topic. The purpose is to encourage you to present your point of view backed up by some research (quoting reliable sources). Each student will select a date to do their presentation and two different dates to evaluate 2 other student presentations. I will consider team presentations. A 2-person team would do a 10-minute presentation, a 3-person team a 15-minute presentation.

The process is…

  1. Sign up for a time slot to deliver your presentation
  2. Select 2 different days where you will evaluate another student’s topic.(Not the same day as your presentation
  3. Choose any computer-related subject of interest to you. Please note we do not want you to give a talk on information from the textbook. Expanding upon something in the book is OK most students talk about how computers of some kind affect their life or career
  4. Prepare the presentation and deliver the presentation to the class in no less than 3.5 min and no more than 5 min

If you stand at the front of the class, deliver your talk, express your ideas or opinions, cite some knowledgeable sources and do this in the time frame allowed, in an organized fashion, you will get good evaluations.

Each presentation will be evaluated by the instructor and two other students.1/3 of your mark from each person.

The evaluation form to be used may be viewed here

Some of the things we will be looking for:

  1. Demonstrate that you have researched your topic
  2. Express your opinion and ideas on the topic
  3. Do you agree, disagree with the "experts"? How do you feel about it, what do you think about it?

You will lose marks:

  1. If you go longer than 5 minutes or less than 3.5 minutes
  2. Obvious lack of effort.

If you to use power point for this short talk please do not create too many slides! If you wish to create 2 or 3 transparencies to illustrate a point you may do so.

If you want to create a short power point presentation make sure that it is no more than 4 or 5 slides. I typically go through 10 to 15 slides for a 50-minute lecture. Please note: I do not have a floppy drive on my laptop. If you want to load power point slides you must send them to me by email the day before your presentation or bring them on a CD-R or a USB storage device.
